The 66-meter-high Mengshan Buddha was carved on the cliff. It is the earliest civilized temple building in the early Buddhist Pure Land Sect Dojo. According to historical records, Li Yuan of Tang Gaozu visited here in 620 AD. Seeing such a magnificent building, he had a whim and named the temple here Kaihua Temple.
Then in 657 AD, Li Zhi and Wu Zetian also came here. As we all know, Wu Zetian admires Buddhism, so in order to express her sincere belief, she specially ordered to make a unique and huge cassock for this giant Buddha. This has attracted the attention of countless people, and many people who believe in Buddhism will go to Mengshan Buddha to pray.
However, during the period of Tang Wuzong, the fate of Mengshan Giant Buddha began to change. In 844 AD, Tang Wuzong ordered the whole country to implement the policy of destroying Buddha, and then Kaihua Temple was abolished, which naturally affected the Mengshan Giant Buddha. Time is a butcher's knife, no matter who can't escape the destruction of time, so can the giant Buddha in Mengshan.
With the passage of time, the natural weathering erosion suffered by Mengshan Giant Buddha has become more and more serious. In addition, wars broke out in all dynasties, and the Buddha statues were also destroyed by the war. Even the head of the giant Buddha has collapsed, and all the parts below the abdomen of the Buddha are buried deep in the rocks. In this way, this one has a glorious history of more than 800 years? The giant of Buddha? Gradually disappeared in people's sight, and this disappearance is nearly 600 years.
It was not until 1983 that the Mengshan Giant Buddha reappeared. At that time, there was a Taiyuan man named Wang Jianni. When he was investigating place names, he found that many place names were related to temples. What puzzles him even more is that there is a place with a big belly cliff here.
In order to solve this mystery, he decided to investigate further. Finally, he was surprised to find that this big belly cliff was the chest of the former Mengshan Buddha. The head of the Buddha statue has long since disappeared, and all the exposed parts above and below the chest are buried by earth and stone, and the thickness can reach tens of meters. No wonder no one has found the Mengshan Buddha here for so many years.
