Why can't we build a square pond at home?

There is a great deal of common wisdom among the people in China, among which rural proverbs are typical. Although these proverbs have nothing to do with elegance and can't be said to be profound, they contain many truths, sum up the wisdom and experience of farmers' life and labor, and are an inseparable part of rural culture.

These proverbs basically don't need to be looked up in a dictionary. You can probably guess their meanings by reading them once, but at first glance, they still sound a little incredible, and sometimes even think that the meaning of sentences has nothing to do with science. However, in fact, on the contrary, these proverbs not only contain many ordinary life experiences, but also embody many truths in our daily life.

Take the following three common sayings as an example. You may have heard these three sentences in your daily life, but you don't quite understand their meanings. Let's take a look.

The first sentence: the gate is too big, and the family is ruined.

As the name implies, this sentence means that in rural homes, the height of the gate should not be higher than the hall, otherwise it will bring disaster to the family and even tear the whole family apart. For this statement, people who are used to living in buildings in cities may not understand why the height of the gate must be higher than that of the hall.

In fact, this has a lot to do with the housing structure in rural areas. There are no buildings in the countryside, and most of them are independent yards. When you enter the yard, you will usually see the door of the hall.

The reason why the height of the gate cannot be shorter than that of the hall is because of two considerations of farmers: on the one hand, in farmers' understanding, the hall symbolizes parents, while the gate is equivalent to children and grandchildren. If the gate is higher than the hall, it seems that children and grandchildren will pass their parents. In rural areas, such families are considered to be gradually declining, and there will be fewer and fewer people in the family until the end.

On the other hand, from the perspective of scientific drainage, if the gate is higher than the hall, the drainage of the hall will be poor. After a long time, the humidity will get heavier and heavier, which is very unfavorable to the health of family members.

Therefore, don't always think that farmers' educational level is generally not high. In fact, sometimes the proverbs they sum up are very reasonable.
