When does the tortoise hibernate?
The time varies from place to place, usually around 10, but the focus is on the temperature.
When the temperature drops below 13℃, the tortoise begins to hibernate. During the whole wintering period, the head, tail and limbs all shrink into the shell, close your eyes, and don't eat, move or excrete until you get rid of the sting. If the environment does not adapt, it is difficult to enter a dormant state. The hibernation temperature of turtles is 1- 10℃. Above 10℃, it is easy to wake the turtle, which will consume physical strength and lead to the decline of the turtle's physique, which is not conducive to the growth and reproduction in the coming year. Repeated hibernation and awakening during hibernation can also lead to the death of turtles. Temperatures below 0℃ will frostbite turtles and even freeze to death. Therefore, the possible temperature changes must be considered when setting the hibernation place for turtles artificially.
Three ways for turtles to hibernate
1. Slurry hibernation method:
Although it looks a little dirty, for turtles, thin mud is their favorite. First of all, the soil is rich in probiotics, which has a good auxiliary effect on the treatment of rotten skin and nails. Compared with the traditional clear water hibernation, turtles hibernating in mud will not rot, but the decay before hibernation can recover itself after a winter ~! This method is also the closest to the hibernation of wild turtles, and the constant temperature effect of thin mud is better than that of water. Suitable for all most kinds of water turtles and semi-water turtles.
Operation method:
1) Take a solid turnover box and dig some soil in the garden as much as possible.
2) Pick up the weeds and stones in the soil and crush the big clods.
3) Add water and mud to ensure that the soil fully absorbs water and becomes mud, and at the same time remove impurities such as hay floating on the water surface, which is 1-2cm higher than the mud surface.
4) After the mud has settled, put the box in the dark, and then put it into the tortoise. Generally, turtles will get into the mud by themselves after tossing for a day or two.
PS: In the process of using slurry method, the soil should not be disinfected with chemicals. It is suggested to use soil near camphor tree. Pay attention to the change of water level at ordinary times and replenish water once a month.
2. Water sand method:
This method is similar to mud method, but the effect of sand is not as good as mud. Turtles are harder to get in, but sand is cleaner than mud. This method is generally only used for strong turtles such as snapping turtles and razor musk. The method is also very simple:
1) find a clean container.
2) Put in sand
3) Wash the sand with water until the water level is higher than the sand surface 1-2cm, and add 2-3 drops of iodophor (the water level of adult snapping turtles is 5cm higher than the sand surface).
4) Put the container in the shade and put the turtle in it. This year's three giant crocodile seedlings, when the outside temperature drops to about 10 degrees, will drill to the bottom of the sand, leaving no trace.
3. Coconut soil method:
This method is equivalent to the dry mud method, which makes use of the characteristics of loose coconut soil and easy for turtles to get in. It is cleaner and easier to clean than mud method, but it needs to be sprayed with water frequently to ensure humidity. This method is most suitable for semi-water turtles, of course, if the humidity is high, water turtles can also do it.
1) find a clean container, pour coconut soil and mix with iodophor for disinfection. Put it in the sun for 1-2 weeks (PS: the smell of coconut wrapped in penis is not normal, so it needs to be aired for a few more days)

3) After the tortoise is buried in the ground and hibernates, it can be covered with a layer of bark (moss is not recommended, it is easy to get moldy).
Judging the humidity of coconut soil: grab a handful of coconut soil by hand, and the humidity is just right after kneading. It's too dry to pinch. Generally in arid areas, the soil should be watered and moistened every week. As for the clear water method, I don't recommend it. In places with poor water quality, hibernating turtles can easily get rotten skin and dirty eyes. Before the turtle hibernates, it is necessary to do a good job of disinfection and prevention, and soak the whole body in yellow powder water or iodophor diluent for disinfection. Finally, it is emphasized that the hibernating tortoise should be placed in the north corner of a cool, shady and windtight room. Check the turtle's condition once a month, and don't disturb the hibernating turtle often.
How to raise turtles in hibernation?
1, paste fat and clear stomach: supplement nutrition and paste fat in September. Stop feeding about two weeks before hibernation, and soak in warm water for defecation in the last three or four days to empty the intestines. All the above are necessary, otherwise the food left in the intestine will ferment and cause their stomach wall and intestine to rupture and die.
2. Hibernation box layout: Use a large plastic storage box covered with thick soil. They will come in by themselves. Leave it for a few days and spray some water on the soil to keep it moist. 10- 13 degrees is the best hibernation temperature. Don't put it in the open air, it will freeze to death below 8 degrees. It is best to put it in the corner of the balcony. Let the temperature drop slowly, and don't let them suddenly feel cold.
3. Observe their situation at any time. Don't forget them! When the weather is warm, take the turtle out and put it back in its original place. Don't feed them for three days. Start feeding on the fourth or fifth day. They must have lost weight. Give them more food and make up for it.
Many people who love turtles for the first time are nervous at the thought that turtles will hibernate and don't know how to deal with it. They are always worried that turtles will starve to death if they don't eat, freeze to death if they are put in such cold water, and so on. The following is the method of hibernation, mainly for water turtles/semi-water turtles.
The real hibernating method is to spread thick wet sand in the container and cover it with newspaper balls. The tortoise will sleep in the sand by itself and replenish water once a week to keep the sand and newspapers moist.
Hibernation is a test for raising turtles at home. First of all, you should make sure that your baby is healthy and free from diseases. Tortoise with poor constitution must not hibernate. Little turtle suggests not to hibernate, winter is very sad! You can prepare some sand for the hibernating turtle, but if it can't climb in, don't bury it by force. Soft-shelled turtles that don't hibernate in the sand can be placed in shallow water and covered with a layer of wet cotton yarn to keep them moist, which also has a certain heat preservation effect.
Turtles who hibernate in the sand should make sure that the sand is clean and pollution-free. Keep the sand moist during the hibernation of turtles. The tortoise may wake up during hibernation, so make sure it doesn't climb where you can't find it after waking up. In addition, turtles who wake up from hibernation must not be fed.
