Feng shui on the cliff

This ancient coffin weighed several hundred catties. How did the ancients put coffins on the cliff? Hanging coffin burial is the oldest way of funeral for ethnic minorities in ancient China, which is more common in remote mountainous areas in southern China. Most of these coffins are placed on steep cliffs.

So how did people transport these heavy coffins to such a high cliff? There are many views on this issue. There is not much explanation here. Because of the long history of hanging coffin burial, I think the most reasonable way is to hang the coffin by boat, make use of the water level and the raised water level, then hang the coffin by boat to the edge of the cliff and put it in a pre-cut hole, or chisel several coffin round holes with a chisel, insert wooden sticks and fix the coffin on it.

Because in ancient times, where there were cliffs, they were generally in rivers. When there was much rain in the rainy season, the natural water level would rise. In this season, people may agree to transport coffins to cliffs. When the water level drops, the coffin buried on it will become a coffin and hang on the cliff. In this way, with the passage of time, the water level gradually decreased, even in modern times. After such a long time, with the geological changes, the water level in some places has dropped significantly, and even some cliffs have dried up without a drop of water, so the hanging coffins left on them are getting higher and higher from the ground, hundreds of meters away from the ground, which is unexpected. What people are talking about is how the coffin flew up such a high cliff, which is really incomprehensible and unbelievable.

So some people say that the ancients were good at carrying coffins with boards, winches, pulleys and ropes. There are also rumors that the ancients used capable people who could fly over the eaves and walk over the walls to put coffins. But these are not practical. The ancients had pulleys and winches, so it was impossible to repair the boardwalk. So I still think it is the most realistic way for the ancients to ship coffins.
