Huizhou archway originated in Han Dynasty, flourished in Tang and Song Dynasties, and reached its peak in Ming and Qing Dynasties. Among the existing 100 memorial archways, there are not only symbol memorial archways, merit memorial archways, but also chastity memorial archways. From the perspective of materials, there are both stone and brick-wood structures. The famous Paifang Group in Tang Yue, Shexian County, the Octagonal Paifang in Guo Xu and the Wenguang Paifang in Xidi Lake in Yixian County have become famous landmarks of Huizhou culture.
Second, Huizhou ancestral temple
Ancestor tablets are enshrined in the ancestral hall, and the ancestors who enter the ancestral hall must be outstanding figures who enjoy a good reputation, make contributions to education or devote themselves to feudal ethics. On the land of ancient Huizhou, the best preserved ancestral hall is the "Hu ancestral hall" in Longchuan, Jixi, and the most magnificent is the "Roche ancestral hall" in Chengkan.
Third, Huizhou folk houses
Constrained by the feudal patriarchal clan system and driven by the duty of honoring ancestors, Huizhou merchants who made a fortune brought a lot of wealth back to their hometown and built beautiful houses around the ancestral temple.
Although the exterior wall of a house is simple, the interior is often extremely luxurious. Brick carving, stone carving and wood carving are widely used. Huizhou merchants' house with deep pockets covers a large area and has perfect internal facilities. It is also called "Folk Forbidden City" by later generations.
