The history of Huizeyuan

In 1919, the Yunnan Provincial Assembly reviewed and approved the "Petition to Prepare a University in this Province" submitted by Gong Zizhi and others. Tang Jiyao, who was the governor and governor of Yunnan at the time, assessed the situation and informed the provincial assembly in September of that year in the name of the Yunnan Governor's Office and the Provincial Governor's Office that "the establishment of a university must be completed in time."

1921 In February, Tang Jiyao's subordinate Gu Pinzhen rebelled against the Tang Dynasty. Tang was forced to resign and leave Hong Kong, followed by Dong Ze and others, and preparations for running the school were put on hold.

In March 1922, Tang Jiyao returned to Yunnan and returned to power. Wang Jiuling and Dong Ze were then ordered to continue preparations for the establishment of the university, and Dong Ze was appointed director of the preparation department. In August, he approved the school's organizational outline and ordered the provincial government to allocate the historic Gongyuan site as a university building and designate Yuantong Mountain as the campus of Donglu University based on the recommendation of the Preparatory Office. He was the first to donate 10,000 yuan (old Yunnan currency) for preparatory expenses, and later donated 500,000 yuan

In November 1922, the preparatory office voted to determine the school leaders. Tang Jiyao and Wang Jiuling were elected as honorary principals, and Dong Ze was elected as the honorary principal. headmaster. In order to commemorate Tang Jiyao's contribution in advocating education and founding Donglu University, the school decided to name the newly built main building after him. The main building is named after Tang Jiyao's nickname "Huize". The preparatory staff also took great pains to use "lou" or "tang" or "yuan" after Tang Jiyao's nickname. Considering that the main building was built on the former site of Mingyuan Building, in order to distinguish the new building from the old building, the word "building" is not used; the main building is close to the Hengjian Hall and Zhigong Hall of Gongyuan, and the word "tang" is no longer used. Finally, the word "yuan" was used to refer to general building construction, and the three words "Huize Yuan" were engraved on the lintels of the front and rear doors of the main building. Huizeyuan got its name from this.

On April 20, 1923, the foundation stone of Huizeyuan was laid.

In 1924, Huize Courtyard was completed. It is a typical French-style building with exquisite design and excellent workmanship. It is a rare building in Yunnan to this day. The designer Zhang Banghan is an early Chinese scholar who studied law.

The May 30th Movement in Shanghai in 1925 and the March 18th Massacre in Beijing in 1926 were the starting points for Yunnan University students to take to the streets to support the struggles of Shanghai workers and Beijing citizens. During the Anti-Japanese War, Huizeyuan became an important position for domestic anti-Japanese propaganda.

On July 15, 1948, the "July 15th" patriotic student movement broke out in Huizeyuan. Huizeyuan is a place where celebrities gather. Dong Ze, Xiong Qinglai, Li Guangtian, etc. have worked here for a long time, and Feng Youlan, Gu Jiegang, Jiang Liangfu, Liu Wendian, Fei Xiaotong, Yan Jici, etc. have taught here. After liberation, party and state leaders Peng Dehuai, Chen Yi, He Long and others visited the school and held symposiums, listened to reports and gave instructions in Huize Hospital.

In 1987, Huize Yuan was announced as a provincial key cultural relic by the Yunnan Provincial Government.
