Wu Zetian was originally from Wenshui, Bingzhou in the early Tang Dynasty, now Wenshui County, Shanxi.

He held the positions of Governor of Zhouzhou and Governor of Jingzhou. During Zhenguan, he moved to the Ministry of Industry, Minister of Industry and Governor of Jingzhou, and was granted the title of Duke of the State.

Later he proclaimed himself emperor, made Luoyang the capital, renamed it Shendu, and established the Wuzhou Dynasty. In the fourth year of Kaiyuan of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty (716 AD) , the posthumous title was changed to Queen Zetian, and in the eighth year of Tianbao (749 AD), the posthumous title was added to Queen Zetian Shunsheng.
