Shilou county is located in the west of Shanxi Province, at the foot of Luliang Mountain and on the east bank of the Yellow River. In the eighteenth year of Emperor Yangdi's reign (598), it was renamed Shilou because there were "stones stacked like buildings" in the east of the county seat, which has been in use ever since. The treasure of the town hall of Shanxi Provincial Museum "Dragon-shaped" was unearthed in Shilou.

Shilou county is located on the east bank of the middle reaches of the Yellow River, west of Luliang Mountain and part of the Loess Plateau. The terrain is high in the east and low in the west, with continuous mountains and deep loess on the surface. Due to the erosion and erosion of running water, the terrain is broken.
The whole territory can be divided into mountainous areas and hilly areas. Shilou Mountain, a mountainous area in the east, was called Tian Tong in ancient times, which runs through the north and south. It is composed of many peaks and has a magnificent posture. Because the stones on the mountain piled up like buildings, it was renamed Shilou Mountain in the Tang Dynasty. During the main peak period, Panshan Mountain is 2000 meters above sea level, which is the highest peak in the county.
In the south-central mountainous area, the main peaks are Shili Mountain and Tuanyuan Mountain, both of which are above 1400 meters above sea level. The western and northern parts of the city and the area around Chengguan are all loess hilly areas. The larger city walls are Xuejiayuan, Caojiayuan and Xishan Courtyard, all of which are above 1000 meters above sea level.
