Lao Dan is a tree with rich western customs and typical western quaint cultural characteristics from form to content. In the play, all kinds of tough guys, gamblers, bandits, farmers and aunts all live in the barren land of the Loess Plateau, bearing heavy feudal shackles and struggling tenaciously with fate.
The characters in the play are distinctive in personality, vivid in language and simple in style, which vividly shows the coldness, ignorance and cunning of the world.
Plot 1: The widow licorice deeply loves the swordsman Barton, and the vendor "camel" deeply loves the widow licorice. The swordsman Barton is threatened by the robber Ma Jiu, so he can't live a good life with licorice. The swordsman Barton decided to get rid of the thief Ma Jiu and design a bet with Ma Jiu. The peddler "Camel" killed Ma Jiu and gave the swordsman Barton a life in order to let his beloved woman live the life he longed for.
Plot 2: Yang Mingyuan, a bandit, wants to do coffin business. In order to expand his business, he provokes Li Hu and his family to make trouble and commit suicide. But it was discovered by Lao Dan (Barton), which triggered a bloody battle.
Plot 3: Lao Dan (Barton) and Glycyrrhiza reluctantly exchange the camel, the only thing left by the "Camel" brothers, for a runaway woman to be their daughter-in-law. The beautiful life of dressing up makes the whole family excited, but the animal desire of the trafficker Zhao Zhen shattered the desire of the Lao Dan family. He rudely raped the boxing ring, and Lao Dan (Barton) started another dispute to protect his face and dignity. As a result, the printing was not satisfactory, and Lao Dan became a big tree angrily.
