Besides acrobatics and games, there are many wonderful pictures of monkeys, dogs and people hunting and playing together. In the Southern and Northern Dynasties, monkey play was popular in Xinye. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Xinye folk played with monkeys.
It is said that during his tenure, Wu Cheng'en lived in seclusion and paid attention to it everywhere, and was deeply impressed by the folk customs of Xinye County, especially the traditional folk art of Xinye Monkey Opera. Moreover, Xinye dialect is widely used in The Journey to the West. For example, Xinye called "jiaozi" a "flat food" and "restless animals" a "osteophyte". Such dialects can be found everywhere in The Journey to the West.
Perhaps because of his meticulous observation of Xinye Monkey Opera and the vivid monkey modality in Xinye Monkey Opera, the image of the Monkey King, a mythical masterpiece of Journey to the West, was created.
