The Origin of Nine Planets Becoming Eight Planets

The nine planets mentioned before 2006 refer to Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Because a celestial body with enough mass and spherical shape can't clear other celestial bodies near its orbit, it is called a "dwarf planet". Pluto just fits this definition, so it is confirmed as a "dwarf planet" by the International Astronomical Union.

On August 24th, 2006, the 26th International Astronomical Union held in Prague passed Resolution No.5, which downgraded Pluto to a dwarf planet and eliminated it from the nine planets in the solar system. Since then, the solar system has changed from nine planets to eight.
