The origin of Shantou and Shanwei names

The origins of these two local names are as follows:

1, Shantou: from the local natural geographical features. According to records, due to the sediment brought by Hanjiang River alluvial on the seashore and the influence of damp waves, a natural sand dike was formed near Shantou city, which is called "Shantou" in dialect. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were defensive facilities such as forts and smoke piers, which were called "Shashantou" and later referred to as "Shantou".

2. Shanwei: Formerly known as "Shan Mei", which means beautiful seaside scenery. It is precisely because of the topographical features that the sandbar is at the end of this place, and the word "beauty" in "Shan Mei" is homophonic with the word "tail" in the local dialect, so people gradually changed "Shan Mei" to "Shanwei".
