Why did the ancients say that "it is better to spend the night in an ancient temple than in a deserted grave"? Is the ancient temple more horrible than the barren grave?

There is an old saying in ancient China that it is better to live in an ancient temple than in a wild grave at night. Why are ancient temples more terrible than barren graves?

This ancient temple has a history of thousands of years. It was first built by the ancients to worship their ancestors and express their grief. Later, with the progress of time, ancient temples began to "diversify": some were used to worship bodhisattvas, some were used to mourn their ancestors, and some were used to fear nature. For various reasons, some ancient temples have been filled with incense and are admired by future generations. However, due to sparsely populated or war damage, some ancient temples gradually fell into disrepair, and the Buddha statues were not enshrined and the temples were not cleaned, which eventually became desolate places.

The ancients were unwilling to go to these dilapidated ancient temples for only one main reason: fear.

The first is psychological fear. These ancient temples are dilapidated and deserted, and most people are scared when they go in during the day, let alone at night. Some scholars in ancient times went to Beijing to take exams for fame and had fun all the way. Many times, they can't find pubs and inns to rest at sunset. In desperation, the ancient temples along the way became their refuge. However, when entering an ancient temple, it is normal for a person to worry about being scared or even staying up all night, not to mention the extremely difficult conditions. It is common for drivers that some timid people give up taking exams in Beijing because of fear.

Secondly, it is physical fear. Most ancient temples were built very early, and they were destroyed as time went on. If there is a stormy night, the ancient temple is in danger of collapse at any time. People who spend the night here may be injured or killed by fallen pillars and end up in a tragic end.

Finally, I am afraid of robbers. Most of the ancient temples are remote, with few people coming and going, and it is difficult for the government to manage them, so robbers often haunt them. Some robbers even "squatted" beside the ancient temple, waiting for passers-by seeking a foothold. Once there are passers-by, they rob with a knife. At this time, passers-by generally dare not resist and can only hand over the money they carry with them. Once you resist, even death is common.

For a long time, abandoned ancient temples have become a nightmare in people's hearts. Even if some passers-by can't find a place to stay at dusk, they would rather stay in a deserted grave. You know, an abandoned grave looks terrible, but it's safer without worrying about accidents such as grave robbers.
