Hong is good at history, geography, phonology, exegesis and poetry creation. Hong's Beijiang poems emphasize "temperament" and "temperament", holding that poetry should "have a different vision and write your own temperament" and appreciating Du Mu's original spirit of "being different from Han, Liu, Yuan and Bai". Criticize Shen Deqian's ancient poetics, "learn from its appearance and forget its spirit first" (volume 4 of Beijiang Poetry Talk); Criticism of Weng Fanggang's poem "If a doctor interprets the classics, he has no experience" (ibid., Volume I). These are all desirable. In addition, the comments on ancient poets and poets at that time are also excellent.
Hong traveled all his life to famous mountains and rivers, covering Wu, Yue, Chu, Qian, Qin, Jin, Qi and Yu. Therefore, he has many landscape poems and many excellent structures. During his stay in Yili, he wrote The Middle Section of Anxi Road, Songs of Heaven, Walking on the Snow Head, and Forty-two Poems of Yili, describing the scenery beyond the Great Wall with unique features. Poetry and pen are excellent in quality, clarity and fluency. His parallel prose is lofty and magnificent, and "every essay is published and handed down to the world" (preface to Yuan Mei, Volume I of Essays by Shige), such as Notes on Going through Customs, Bi Ji, Notes on Visiting Tiantai Mountain and Commandments, etc., are all famous.
Hong's works include Collection of Poems and Talks in Juanshige, Collection of Poems and Talks Selected by Hehui, Collection of Poems and Talks in Gengshengzhai, Poems in Beijiang and Zuozhuan in Spring and Autumn Period.
Hong's former residence is located in Xishizi Lane, Yanling East Road, Changzhou. Hong (1746- 1809), a native of Changzhou, Beijiang, took the second place in 55 years of Qingganlong (1790).
