The Origin of Shenwumen in the Forbidden City in Beijing

Shenwumen is the north gate of the Forbidden City. Built in the 18th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty (1420), it was originally named Xuanwu Gate, and was renamed Shenwumen to avoid the name of Emperor Kangxi Michelle Ye.

There is a bell and drum in it, corresponding to the bell and drum tower, which is used to start the shift. But when the emperor lived in the palace, the bell on the Shenwu Gate stopped ringing. As the back door of the imperial palace, Shenwumen is an important entrance guard for the daily entrance and exit of the imperial palace. Empresses in the Ming and Qing Dynasties kissed silkworms through this door. When the Qing emperor returned to the palace from Jehol or Yuanmingyuan, he often entered the palace from this gate. This door is also a special door for empresses and members of the royal family to enter and leave the palace. When the emperor is on patrol, he can leave the palace through the meridian gate, but the accompanying concubines must leave the palace through the Shenwumen. If the emperor serves the empress dowager out of the palace, they will go out of the Shenwumen together.

1924, Puyi was expelled from the palace and left this door. The plaque "Palace Museum" above the door was inscribed by the famous historian Guo Moruo in 197 1 year.

Extended data

At dusk, the bell tower of Shenwumen rang 108 before "getting up". At that time, one night was divided into five watches, also known as five nights or five drums. A shift lasts about two hours. Every time "on duty", the flag drummer will beat the drums until the next morning, when the duty is over and the morning bell rings again, which is also 108. The same is true of the bell and drum tower in the north of Di 'anmen, so there is a saying of "morning bell and dusk drum" in ancient times. But when the emperor lived in the palace, it was stipulated that the Shenwumen would no longer ring bells.

The total height of Shenwumen is 3 1m, and the plane is rectangular. The base is a white marble sumeru, and the city platform has three tickets to open the door, and the tower is built on it.
