Cheng Wenbing’s profile

Cheng Wenbing (1833-1910), courtesy name Congzhou and posthumous title Zhuangqin, was born in Fuyang County (now Zaozhuang Town, Yingdong District) in the late Qing Dynasty. He has little ambition and loves to study the art of war. He often regrets that he has no money to study. When he was 11 years old, he dropped out of school because his family had no overnight food. When he was 14 years old, he was introduced to Yingzhou City and worked as a helper. At 17 o'clock, he was recruited into the Yaxiang Regiment of Yingzhou Prefecture as a soldier. The prefect Caiyuhe saw that he was tall and resourceful, and gave him 200 guards to lead. Later, he was spotted by Yuan Jiasan who was stationed in Yingzhou; he was recruited as a forward for the cavalry team, and later Promoted to defense. Due to his achievements in suppressing the enemy, he was promoted to Qianshan guerrilla in the second year of Tongzhi (1863), leading 2,000 people to garrison Mengcheng. In the fourth year of Tongzhi, he was promoted to the deputy general of Qingjiang Association in Guizhou, commanding 15,000 people, and was still stationed in northern Anhui. In the twelfth year of Tongzhi, he was dismissed by the emperor. He was awarded the title of Commander-in-Chief of Jiujiang; in the ninth year of Guangxu (1883), he was moved to Hubei as Admiral. After the Sino-Japanese War, he was ordered to garrison Zhangjiawan and move to Fujian Province. In the twenty-sixth year of Guangxu's reign, he served in the Qinwang Division in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, and Anhui, and was promoted to admiral of the Yangtze River Navy the following year. In the second year of Xuantong (1910), he died of illness at the residence of the Navy admiral at the age of 77. After Cheng Wenbing rose to prominence, he thought of honoring his ancestors. When he became the governor of Hubei, he chose a geomantic treasure land in Zhongliu Village (now Yuanzhai Village) in the southeastern part of the city and built a manor; when he became the governor of Fujian, he built a dazzling place on the east side of the Drum Tower of Yingzhou Prefecture (now the District Construction Bank).
