In the seventh year of Xianfeng in Qing Dynasty, Yuan Jia took a fancy to Yuan Zhai, a treasure trove of geomantic omen, and spent a huge sum of money to buy it and start construction. Xianfeng was completed in ten years. Covering an area of 270 mu, there are 248 buildings, a walled village with a perimeter of 1.800 m and a height of 10 m, six turrets and three moats around it. The overall layout of the former residence is based on the east, middle and west axes, with the central axis as the main axis, which is symmetrical left and right. The overall bird's eye view is a word' rich'. The courtyard is connected with quiet music, forming a complete and unique building complex. All buildings are made of traditional bricks, wood, lime and other building materials. On the roof of the building, there are brick carvings of lions, tigers, leopards, horses and monkeys. The eaves of the four corners are towering, and the dragon-shaped beast points directly at the sky, which is magnificent. There is a quadrangle and a hall building on the west axis, which is the birthplace of Yuan Shikai.
After Yuan Shikai left home, he went back to his hometown in Yuanzhai seven times, or visited relatives and friends or attended funerals, and his time at home was very short. After 1950, the people's government took Fu Yuan as a grain depot, which was destroyed in the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. Now there is a three-level courtyard with a complete western axis, a living room in the front yard with a central axis and a hall in the middle court, which is the place where Yuan Shikai was born. 10 meter high village wall is basically intact, but it is seriously damaged by nature. Six turrets and Fuyuan Garden in the village have been destroyed, and some parts of three moats have been filled in by villagers and turned into houses. In order to protect and develop Fu Yuan, Xiangcheng Museum has assigned special personnel to guard and gradually repair some damaged buildings. As Yuan Shikai is a famous figure in the modern history of China, tourists come to visit him all year round, and his cultural landscape is of great value.
