Sun Deng’s anecdotes and allusions

Sun Dengxiao

According to the "Jin Shu Biography of Ruan Ji": "Ji met Sun Deng in Sumen Mountain, and learned about Shang Lue Zhonggu and Qi Shen's art of guiding Qi. "No, I retreated because of the long roar. When I reached the halfway point, I heard a sound like a luan and a phoenix, echoing in the rock valley." This was later used as an allusion to wandering in the mountains and letting out a long roar. Sun Deng was proficient in music and was a person with the highest level of "Xiao". The Xiaotai of Sumen Mountain in Baiquan, Huixian City, Henan Province today is famous for living in seclusion here and "howling" in the mountains and forests.

This matter is described in Yu Qiuyu's "Looking for China", as follows:

For Ruan Ji, the more important mountain is Mount Sumen. Mount Sumen is located in Huixian County, Henan Province. At that time, a famous hermit, Sun Deng, lived in seclusion there. Mount Sumen became famous because of Sun Deng, and Sun Deng was often called "Mr. Sumen". After Ruan Ji went up the mountain, he squatted in front of Sun Deng and asked him a series of important historical and philosophical questions, but Sun Deng seemed to have heard nothing and said nothing, not even turning his eyes.

Ruan Ji looked stupidly at Sun Deng, who looked like a clay and wood carving, and suddenly realized how meaningless his big question was, so he quickly cut it off - maybe someone else could communicate with the master in front of him. A vocabulary system? As if driven by a magical force, he roared slowly. After whistling for a while, he looked at Sun Deng again. Sun Deng looked at him with a smile and said, "Do it again!" Upon hearing this, Ruan Ji quickly stood up and whistled to the mountains and sky for a long time. After roaring and turning around, Sun Deng had calmed down again. Ruan Ji knew that he had completed an exchange with this master and that his trip was not in vain.

Ruan Ji went down the mountain, a little happy and a little confused. Just halfway up the mountain, a miracle happened. Like heavenly music playing, like the sound of a harp, like a hundred phoenixes singing in unison, an unimaginable music suddenly filled the mountains, fields, forests and valleys. Ruan Ji was shocked for a moment and then immediately realized that this was the roar of Master Sun Deng. It was so brilliant and holy that he couldn't compare it to his own roar. But Master Sun Deng obviously did not want to compete with him, but to answer all his historical and philosophical questions. Ruan Ji raised his head and listened until the whistle ended. Then he hurried home and wrote a "Biography of Mr. Adult".

He learned what "adult" means from Sun Deng. He said in the article that "adult" is a kind of existence that is of the same body as creation, coexisting with heaven and earth, carefree in the world, and complete with Tao. In comparison, how ridiculous are the gentlemen in the world who restrain themselves and practice and walk on the ropes. The world is constantly changing. What etiquette can gentlemen stick to? To put it bluntly, a gentleman who practices etiquette but is self-righteous is like a louse living in the crotch of his trousers. He crawls around but can't get out of the crotch seam, and still claims to be following the rules; bites someone when he's hungry, and thinks he's found some Feng Shui auspicious house.
