Tan Pengfei, born in 1933, is from Shanghai. In 1950, he worked as a trainee at the Shanghai Automotive Electrical Factory and later as a technician. At the same time, he performed in dramas in the drama team of the Shanghai Huxi Workers Club Amateur Art Troupe, and participated in dramas such as "Thunderstorm", "The Soldiers Are Coming", and "When the Maple Leaves Are Red". In 1957, he was admitted to the Performance Department of Shanghai Theater Academy as a cadre student. At that time, he had already married and had to support his family. Since he had no salary income, he returned to working in the factory. The following year, the newly established Pearl River Film Studio came to Shanghai to scout for acting talents.
