The parent object is Comet Swift-Tuttle with a period of 133 years. This is also the first time that a comet has been identified as the parent object of a meteor shower. Comet Swift-Tuttle was predicted to return periodically around 1982, but it was not observed.

On September 27 of that year, Japanese comet expert Tsuruhiko Kiuchi discovered Comet Swift-Tuttle again. To commemorate his achievements, the name of the comet was also changed to Comet Swift-Tuttle and Comet Kinuchi.
Comet Swift-Tuttle returned in 1992, and the Perseids meteor shower broke out in 1991 and 1992, reaching 400 meteors per hour. The flow rate decreases every year thereafter.
