Hongyaxia Scenic Area is located at the southern foot of Taiyue Mountain National Forest Park, in Maha Township, Lingshi County, 20 kilometers west of Lingshi County, 5 kilometers away from Lingshi exit of Dayungao Road, 6.5 kilometers away from Mianshan Scenic Area in Jiexiu and Wang Jia Courtyard in Lingshi County, the first residence of China, and 9 kilometers away from Zishou Temple, a Millennium ancient temple. Hongya Canyon, located at the foot of Taiyue Mountain, belongs to Taihang Mountain system, which was uplifted by Mesozoic Yanshan movement and reformed by Cenozoic Himalayan movement. Its landform belongs to hilly karst eroded Zhongshan, a rocky mountainous area with various landform types, with a history of more than 100 million years.
This scenic spot has undulating peaks and steep cliffs. The U-shaped canyon is magnificent, with an altitude of 900-2,500 m, and the highest point, Niujiao Temple, is 2,566.6m, which is the highest peak in Taiyue Mountain, the commanding height in Jinzhong and the fifth peak in Shanxi Province. The terrain is high in the east and low in the west, and there is a main ditch at the bottom of Chibi. The climate belongs to a typical temperate continental climate, with strong monsoon influence, distinct seasons and changeable climate. The autumn in Changchun, Xia Dong is shorter. The annual average temperature 10.7℃, the lowest monthly average temperature 3.7℃ and the highest monthly average temperature 23.7℃. The vegetation of Hongya Grand Canyon is well preserved, and the forest coverage rate is over 85%. There are 233 species of woody plants, belonging to 44 families and 99 genera. There are more than 500 kinds of vegetation in 62 families.
From the bottom to the top of the cliff, it can be divided into four vertical zones: shrubs and agricultural reclamation areas below the altitude of 1200m; At an altitude of 1200- 1800 meters, it is a mixed coniferous and broadleaved forest belt, and the main tree species are Pinus tabulaeformis, Picea, Populus davidiana, Betula platyphylla and so on. Altitude 1800-2200m, coniferous forest belt, dominated by Larix principis-rupprechtii; Above 2200 meters above sea level, it is a mountain shrub meadow. From the valley, you can see lush forest resources, woody plants and herbs are hard to count. There are countless precious Chinese herbal medicines, such as Ganoderma lucidum, Oletum Trogopterori, Polyporus umbellatus, Cangpu, Codonopsis pilosula, etc., which are known as the "treasure house of biodiversity".
There are about 160 species of animals in Hongyaxia, including 40 species of mammals and 120 species of birds, mainly including leopard, musk deer, roe deer, black stork, wild goat, wild boar, rock sheep, fox, hare, pheasant and owl. The comprehensive environmental quality of the scenic spot is good, and the atmospheric environmental quality has reached the secondary standard of Ambient Air Quality Standard (3095— 1996). The water quality of the scenic spot is good, reaching the first-class standard of drinking water, without pollution, and it has the reputation of "green lung in North China" and "natural oxygen bar".
