Introduction of Wei Meng Airport in Guiping City

Xu Meng Airport, located in Xu Meng Town, Guiping City, Guangxi, was built in the early 1970s. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a survey report of the United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East pointed out that the South China Sea is rich in oil resources. Therefore, the South China Sea, which has been neglected by the world, has become the object of contention by many countries overnight. Since the early 1970s, in order to compete for the abundant oil resources in the South China Sea, ASEAN countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei have claimed sovereignty over the islands in the South China Sea, and started to occupy some small islands in the South China Sea militarily, which have actually been controlled to this day. In order to cope with the complicated international situation in the South China Sea, and in view of the fact that the Nansha Islands are far away from China's territory, and the ASEAN countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei are close to the Nansha Islands, it is impossible for the South China Sea Fleet to prevent or intimidate ASEAN countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei from further encroaching on China's sovereignty over the South China Sea with the operational strength of China's South China Sea Fleet at that time and the inability of warships to stop carrying fighters. Therefore, in order to cope with this complicated international situation and prevent Vietnam and other ASEAN countries from further occupying and plundering the Nansha Islands, Guiping Wei Meng Airport came into being under this specific historical condition. It is precisely because of this specific historical reason that Guiping Wei Meng Military Airport is a naval airport, not an air force airport.
