Wulei Temple is located at the southern foot of Xiangwang Peak of Wulei Mountain in Guanhaiwei Town, Cixi City. According to Guangxu's "Cixi County Chronicle" and other relevant historical records, the prototype of Wulei Temple emerged in the 3rd century AD.
Wulei Temple has many places of interest and historical sites. There is a pool in front of the temple, named "Zhenming Pool". The clear water flows out from the Elephant Eye Tomb in the east, pours into the Zhenming Pool, and then flows through a small channel to Moon Lake never dries up all year round. It is said that Naluoyan personally led his disciples to dig it day and night. During this period, he fought with monsters in the mountains and many people were killed and injured. Therefore, it is also called "Wan Gong Pond". The water in the pond is clear and sweet, and can help people get rid of diseases and exorcise evil spirits. There are five red pine trees beside the pool, which were planted by future generations as the fragrant trees of Wulei Temple. On the hillside not far from the temple, there are several towering ancient trees. The age of some trees is difficult to estimate, and it takes several people to hug them. There are mostly camphor trees in the temple, with luxuriant branches and leaves, evergreen all year round, and complement each other with the golden buildings of Wulei Temple. In the first year of Wende of Emperor Xizong of the Tang Dynasty (888 AD), the scale of Wulei Temple had been greatly expanded. The various sutra buildings and pavilions are extremely beautiful, and the palaces and pavilions are full of splendor. It can be said that "the towers of ancient temples are high to escape the summer heat, and the pines and cypresses produce cold weather in the sunny days."
According to legend, 2000 years ago, the eminent Indian monk Narayan visited China’s famous mountains and scenic spots, traveled across mountains and rivers, and selected this Feng Shui treasure land on Wulei Mountain. Finally, he built a hut in Wulei Mountain to teach scriptures and lit a bonfire. Attract followers. When the raging fire rose into the sky, it was also the beginning of cultural exchanges between China and India. However, although the holy fire is blazing, there are few who can respond; high mountains separate us, and it is difficult to find a true friend. It is said that Sun Quan's mother passed by by boat one day and noticed a looming bonfire, so she ordered someone to investigate carefully to find out the whole story. So a small temple was built specifically where the holy fire rose. This was probably the predecessor of Wulei Temple. With this small monastery, Narayan ended the life of sleeping in the open air and sleeping on a stone pillow for many years.
