Red Arowana, scientific name: Scleropages formosus, English name: Red Arowana.
The body length can reach 80~90 cm. The red arowana has a small living range and mainly grows in rivers in Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia. The red arowana cannot be artificially reproduced and is on the verge of extinction. Therefore, it is listed as a Class A protected animal under the Washington Convention and is extremely precious.
Morphological characteristics
Original from Indonesia. The body is cylindrical. Body length 50~100 cm. Body color pink or dark red. The scales are large, reflecting the charming ruby ??luster, and the gill covers are rich red. There is a pair of short beards at the corners of the mouth. The back is smooth, and the rear part of the dorsal fin is moved above the caudal peduncle, corresponding to the anal fin.
The breeding water temperature is 24~28℃, and the water quality is neutral or slightly acidic soft water. It likes to eat small fish, shrimps, shellfish, water worms, red worms, mealworms, etc. It is easy to raise and grows quickly. Do not mix with small fish. Arowanas are difficult to breed in aquariums. It is a relatively primitive fish on the earth and is known as a "living fossil".
Arowana is an ancient fish, Osteoglossidae, with weak reproductive capacity. The female fish lays eggs, and the male fish hatches and raises them in the mouth, which is very strange. Because of the two beards on its mouth, the large shiny scales and its ancient origin, people naturally connected it with the mysterious dragon and called it "dragon fish".
In Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and places where overseas Chinese are concentrated, arowana is regarded as a sacred fish. It is believed that it can prosper the home and ward off evil spirits, and is raised as a feng shui fish. Especially the red arowana, due to its endangered Extinct, it was listed as a Class A protected animal under the Washington Wildlife Conservation Treaty in 1980 and is highly valued. In Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, the price of a red arowana can exceed one million yuan, and it is regarded as a symbol of wealth and status.
Variety
Asian arowanas can generally be divided into three categories according to their origin, namely golden dragons, red dragons and green dragons. Among them, golden dragons can be further divided into two types: the red-tailed golden dragon that grows in Sumatra, Indonesia, and the cross-backed golden dragon in Malaysia.
Similarly, red dragons are also available in "super red" (pepper red), blood red and orange red. However, the differences between the three red dragons are smaller than the differences between the two golden dragons, and all red dragons come from Kalimantan, Indonesia.
As for Qinglong, due to its wide distribution, the Qinglong in each place is slightly different, but the difference is not big. There are also green dragons and yellow-tailed dragons, but not many people keep them.
In 2003, a study classified the species of Asian arowana into four independent species based on morphology and genetics, namely:
