What about the fetal umbilical cord around the neck?

1 What is umbilical cord around neck? Normal umbilical cord length is 30 ~ 70cm, umbilical cord shorter than 30cm is called umbilical cord too short, and umbilical cord longer than 70cm is called umbilical cord too long. Umbilical cord is too long, which easily leads to neck winding, body winding, umbilical cord knotting, umbilical cord compression and umbilical cord prolapse. Umbilical cord around the neck is because the fetus is hyperactive in the uterus. When the fetus rotates, the umbilical cord is easy to wrap around the neck, sometimes 1~2 laps, sometimes 2~5 laps. B-ultrasound can be used to diagnose whether the fetus has umbilical cord around its neck.

How is the umbilical cord formed around the neck?

1. Fetuses with polyhydramnios are prone to tumbling and umbilical cord entanglement.

2. If the baby's umbilical cord is too long, it will cause the umbilical cord to wrap around the neck.

3. The fetal volume is too small, and the activity space in the uterine cavity is large, which easily leads to umbilical cord entanglement.

3 Harm of Umbilical Cord Around the Neck Because the umbilical cord is elastic and slippery, it floats in amniotic fluid, and generally does not wrap too tightly, which is not harmful. However, if the umbilical cord is wound too tightly, it will affect the passage of umbilical cord blood, hinder the blood circulation between the fetus and placenta, and make the fetus ischemic and hypoxic, and even die. Especially in labor, the umbilical cord is too tight around the neck, which will slow down the fetal heart rate and affect the decline of the fetal head, thus affecting the production process.

4 What about umbilical cord around the neck? Umbilical cord around the neck is not an indication of cesarean section. When the umbilical cord relaxes around the neck, if the umbilical cord wraps around the neck once, there is no abnormality in the fetus, and there is no abnormality in prenatal fetal heart monitoring. The changes of fetal heart rate are closely monitored during delivery, and most of them can be delivered smoothly through vagina.

The umbilical cord is wrapped too tightly. When the umbilical cord is wound too tightly or around the neck for more than 2 weeks, with fetal movement, the umbilical cord will be tighter around the neck, which will affect the blood circulation of umbilical blood vessels. After delivery, with the contraction of the uterus and the gradual decline of the fetal head, the umbilical cord wrapped around the fetal neck will be tightened, leading to intrauterine hypoxia and suffocation. The clinical manifestation is that the fetal heart rate changes and the heart rate suddenly increases or decreases. It's time for emergency treatment. After the delivery of the fetal head, the umbilical cord should be interrupted immediately with hemostatic forceps, and the delivery should be ended as soon as possible to rescue the fetus.
