What are the taboos of Feng Shui at Chaoshan Bridge Festival?

The undead crossing the bridge is an interesting folk custom of offering sacrifices, which is very popular in Chaoshan area. It is said that this folk custom comes from the folklore of Emperor Taizong's visit to the underworld and Liu Quan's visit to melon.

When Chaoshan people arranged a bridge crossing ceremony for their deceased relatives, watermelon became the protagonist. However, in the underworld, some lazy children are unwilling to help them pick watermelons, so they will catch young people to pick watermelons instead of them on the road at night, so in the evening of early June, Chaoshan people have the habit of not going out.

In addition, there are many taboos. For example, it is forbidden to buy watermelons. Watermelon belongs to mourners from the first day of June. In addition to watermelon, five kinds of fruits that are worshipped across the bridge: peaches, plums, lychees, grapes and wampee, are also forbidden to buy. In addition, married daughters are forbidden to return to their parents' homes. If they go back to their parents' home from the first day of June to the sixth day of June, it means that there is a funeral at their parents' home. Therefore, it is forbidden to go back to parents' home these days, and then it is forbidden to go to relatives and friends' homes. If you don't have a mission to worship at home, don't go to relatives and friends' homes.

It is forbidden to pack jiaozi. People who have the task of worshipping will make a bridge deck and hold five banquets, among which the bridge deck is the most exquisite. It should be made into soles, and pigs should be eaten or fed before noon on the sixth day of June, otherwise the dead will be delayed to cross the bridge.

The date of the deceased crossing the bridge is fixed on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month every year. Where there are adults in the family who died before the sixth day of June of that year (including last year), the bridge-crossing ceremony will be held on the day when there is no bridge-crossing ceremony, and each deceased only needs to hold it once.

The undead crossing the bridge is superstitious, but it is still accepted by Chaoshan people because it contains the ethical concept of filial piety. This custom is still popular among Chaoshan people.
