But the most well-known incarnation of Wenquxing refers to the god Zitong (Emperor Wenchang). He was originally from the Jin Dynasty. His surname was Zhang Yazi. He lived in Qiqu Mountain, Zitong County, Sichuan. In the second year of Ningkang in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, he rebelled against Fu Jian of the former Qin Dynasty. He was killed in battle and was worshiped as the God of Zitong. Later, Sichuan students believed that Zitong God had the power to protect literary fortunes, and they all went to worship him during exams.
When Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty entered Shu, he passed through Qiqu Mountain and was impressed by the heroism of Zhang Yazi, so he posthumously named him Prime Minister Zuo. During the reign of Emperor Zhenzong of the Song Dynasty, he was granted the title of "King of Divine Wen, Saint, Military, Filial Piety, Loyalty and Benevolence", and during the reign of Emperor Guangzong of the Song Dynasty, he was granted the title of "King of Loyalty, Wen, Ren, Wu, Filial Piety, Saint and Martyrdom". During the reign of Emperor Lizong of the Song Dynasty, he was again granted the title of "King of Divine Wen Sheng Wu Xiao De Zhong Ren", so Zhang Yazi, the god of Zitong, was called the "Emperor Wenchang".
