As of the end of 2016, Shiyan City has jurisdiction over 3 districts, 1 city, and 4 counties, namely: Zhangwan District, Maojian District, Yunyang District, Danjiangkou City, Yunxi County, Zhushan County, Zhuxi County, Fang County.

Shiyan City is located in the northwest of Hubei Province, in the eastern part of the Qinba Mountains and the middle and upper reaches of the Han River. It borders three provinces and cities including western Henan, southern Shaanxi, and eastern Chongqing. The unique geographical location has given the Shiyan area since ancient times the reputation of "stretching across Jingxiang in the south, pillowing Shangluo in the north, touching Nanyang in the east, and touching Hanzhong in the west".

Historical evolution of Shiyan City

In May 1949, after the liberation of Shiyan, the Liangyun Special Office was established and belonged to the Shaanxi Southern Office (today's Shaanxi Southern Office) Shaanxi Province).

In February 1950, it was transferred back to Hubei Province, and the Liangyun Commissioner's Office was changed to the Yunyang Commissioner's Office.

In December 1952, Xiangyang and Yunyang agencies merged.

In 1965, two special offices were established, Xiangyang and Yunyang. The Yunyang special office administered six counties including Yunxian, Zhushan, Zhuxi, Yunxi, Fangxian and Junxian.

In 1967, the central government decided to build my country's second automobile manufacturing plant in Shiyan, and successively designated Shiyan District, Huanglong District and Maoping Commune in Chadian District of Yun County (now Yunyang District) to establish Shiyan Service Department, under the jurisdiction of Yunyang District.

In 1969, the Shiyan Office was abolished and Shiyan City was established within the territory, under the leadership of Yunyang Special Office.

In February 1973, Shiyan City was upgraded to a prefecture-level city and was directly under the jurisdiction of Hubei Province.

In October 1994, Yunyang area merged with Shiyan City, still called Shiyan City, and governed Danjiangkou City, Yunyang District (formerly Yun County), Yunxi County, Zhushan County, Zhuxi County, Fang County, Zhangwan District, and Maojian District to this day.
