The Great Buddha Temple, one of the five jungles in Guangzhou, was built in the Southern Han Dynasty and has a history of more than 1000 years. It flourished from Shunzhi to Qianlong in Qing Dynasty, and it is a famous Buddhist temple in Lingnan.
The Great Buddha Temple was built in the Southern Han Dynasty (9 17-97 1). In the second year of Kangxi (A.D. 1663), Wang Shangkexi of Pingnan donated money to rebuild the Buddhist temple, which was named after three giant Buddha statues with a height of 6 meters and a weight of 10 ton were enshrined in the center of the Ursa Major Hall. The giant nanmu column used in the main hall of the temple was given by King Annan (present-day Vietnam), and it is still intact after 350 years.
Its architectural art imitates the official temple of the capital in Lingnan style, which has high cultural and artistic appreciation value and enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad. There is also a large Buddhist library open to the public and believers, with a collection of 22,000 kinds and 6,543,800 volumes.
opening up to the outside world
At present, the new building of the Great Buddha Temple has been completed, and these historical buildings have to be demolished to make way because they are blocked by a row of arcades on the West Lake Road after the expansion of the temple. After the Cultural Revolution, the Guangzhou Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government approved the reopening of the Great Buddha Temple.
198 1 year, Master Guangming, vice president of Guangzhou Buddhist Association, became the abbot and began to rebuild. After hard work, the Hall of the Great Heroes was restored to its original appearance, and three bronze Buddha statues were recast, each with a height of 6 meters and a weight of 10 ton. More and more domestic and foreign tourists and pilgrims come to visit the Buddha ceremony.
On August 9th, 1993, the Guangzhou Municipal Government announced the Giant Buddha Temple as a municipal cultural relics protection unit. Daxiong Hall faces south, with a building area of1.200m2.. It is still the highest in Lingnan. Despite more than 300 years of wind and rain erosion, its style still exists. High-quality wood donated by King Annan (present-day Vietnam) as a beam-column framework has been basically intact so far.
