Barbizon School of French Landscape Painting
In Barbizon In the era when the painting school was in, the status of landscape painting was inferior to that of historical painting, mythological and religious theme painting. Starting from the European Renaissance, landscape paintings initially appeared as "backgrounds" in Christian themes, ancient Greek and Roman mythological stories. Compared with the Middle Ages, abstract and patterned backgrounds were replaced by realistic landscapes, which was a big step towards nature and conveyed the humanistic spirit of being close to nature. However, the plot and allegory are still the protagonists. , the beautiful scenery only serves as a foil.
It was not until the 17th century that Ruisdal and Hobbema of the Netherlands created some of the earliest pure landscape paintings in Europe, depicting the natural scenery of the countryside; in the 19th century, the British painters Constable and Taylor appeared. Two outstanding landscape painters.
At that time, the Barbizon School faced not only changes based on tradition, but also artistic innovation under the rejection of conservative forces.
Corot initially received a classical education. His teacher Michelon won the Rome Prize for Historical Landscape Painting in 1817. After Michelon died in 1822, Corot continued to study with Michelon. He studied painting with the neoclassical teacher Bertin, and also went to the Louvre Museum to copy Claude Laurent's landscape paintings to participate in the Rome Prize competition.
In 1825, Corot traveled to Italy for the first time and painted many buildings and famous ruins. At that time, Corot's creations were deeply influenced by classicism. Comparing his sketch "Nanni Bridge" in Rome with "Nanni Bridge" which was created based on this and was selected for the Salon of 1827, it can be found that the latter was mixed with Fictitious beautiful trees and winding paths are laid out in the format of a classical landscape painting. The reason why the Salon accepted Corot's works was precisely because his style conformed to the usual taste at this time. Later in the Salon, Corot continued to exhibit his historical landscape paintings, such as "Saint Jeremiah in the Wilderness" in 1833 and "Diana Bathing" in 1836. After returning to France from Italy, Corot lived in the city of Avery. He often went to Fontainebleau Forest to sketch, and also went to Normandy, Brittany, Rouen, Dunkirk and other cities to sketch.
