Hung Hom (kàn) is an old district located in Kowloon Peninsula of Hong Kong, most of which is located in Kowloon City. However, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Hong Kong Coliseum and the entrance to the Cross-Harbour Tunnel in Yau Tsim Mong District have traditionally been regarded as a small part of Hung Hom.
Hung Hom consists of Dahuan and Hung Hom Bay. At first, only the big ring was land.
Starting from 1884, the Hong Kong government began to reclaim the sea in Hung Hom Bay. At that time, red? No name yet.
1909, when a construction worker dug a well, he found that the well water gushed out was scarlet. Some feng shui experts accused Long Mai of breaking ground and bleeding.
On the other hand, the test results of well water show that the well water turns red because it contains compounds of iron sulfide and mercury. In any case, because of the red well water, the area got the red name.
At present, most buildings in this area are residential buildings, but in fact, in the past, this area was a comprehensive development area, with industries (Huangpu Wharf), businesses, public housing and private housing. However, with the reconstruction of the old district (demolished Valley Road Village) and the large-scale reclamation project in Hung Hom Bay, the district has become a residential community.
With the relocation of the Hung Hom Pier, the newly reclaimed land includes private housing estates, the Peninsula Grand Court, the Red Bay Peninsula and the student dormitory of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
