The Guanyin Lotus Garden was planned and constructed by the Macao and Portuguese governments in 1997 and was officially opened on March 21, 1999. The Guanyin Lotus Garden was designed by Portuguese designer Cristina Rocha Leiria. It was later cast by Chenguang Group Company in Nanjing, China, and the 47-year-old parts were installed at the current site. The direction of the Guanyin statue's face was determined by precise calculations by Feng Shui masters. It shows that Guanyin is climbing over Songshan Mountain and heading towards the Guanyin Hall located on Lieutenant General Avenue.
Guanyin Lotus Garden is a statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva. It is located on an artificial island. The total height is 20 meters, of which the base part is 7 meters high, the standing statue is 13 meters high, and the bottom diameter is 19 meters tall, the base is surrounded by 16 lotus petals, with a total weight of 50 tons. The statue of Guanyin has a simple shape, with its hands clasped on its chest and its skirt flickering, as if walking slowly, showing graceful lines and movement. Guanyin has a serene appearance, with her eyes closed when viewed from a distance, but when viewed up close, her eyes are looking at the world.
Walking along the long cross-sea suspension bridge, you can gradually see the whole picture of the Guanyin statue. It looks different from a distance. Its expression is dignified and solemn and full of the unique majesty of the god. The base of this statue is a religious building, which houses professional theological researchers and introduces the unique belief culture of the trinity of traditional Chinese Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Interestingly, the architectural design of this statue was completed by a Portuguese artist and was built in Nanjing, China. This not only shows the friendship between China and Portugal, but also highlights Macao’s unique status as a cultural exchange center.
The lotus seat of Guanyin Lotus Garden is divided into two floors. The first floor is a viewing room with a reception and souvenir sales department; the lower floor is a multi-functional exhibition hall and a small library; the library is multimedia The resource center has more than 600 volumes of various religious books in multiple languages, as well as other CDs, audio and video tapes related to religious culture. The multifunctional exhibition hall can accommodate up to fifty people and is suitable for small events.
