He founded Sichuan Machinery Bureau, the first machinery factory in modern Sichuan, and managed the Yellow River and Dujiangyan in Sichuan successively. He was called an ancient water conservancy expert. His main works include Sichuan Salt Law Records and Ding Wencheng's Public Performance.

Ding Jian said: According to the regulations of the Qing Dynasty, an official who moved from one place to another could not settle in his place of work. However, after Ding Baozhen came to Shandong with his family and brothers, his wife Chen and his second brother died successively, so it was impossible to bury their relatives in their original place. Therefore, they asked the court to buy ten acres of land in Jinan. Ding Jialinzi and Ding Family Courtyard in Laojunmen Lane near Zhudian, in this case, they should get special approval from the court. After Ding Baozhen's death, the imperial court ordered that the coffin be buried in Jinan, so that it can go straight all the way and tear down every family. The descendants of Shi Ding were afraid of disturbing the people, so they chose to return to Jinan by water, and they walked for nearly a year and a half.

Ding Jian said that his great-great grandfather Ding Baozhen had five sons and five daughters, all with official titles, and his great-great grandfather was often the eldest son. He has successively served as the magistrate of Datong, the magistrate of Lu 'an, the provincial judge of Gansu, the minister of Guangdong and the nursing governor of Guangxi. Ding Tichang has two sons. The eldest son, Ding Daozhou, was Ding Jian's grandfather and served as the deputy director of the Mint Bureau of the Ministry of Finance during the National Government. During the Japanese puppet regime, Ding Daozhou was unwilling to work for the Japanese and avoided living in the Tianjin Concession, resulting in a poor family. After the death of 1942, the Ding Family Courtyard was forced to be sold to the descendants of giant businessmen as a dowry for her daughter and later became the property of her son-in-law yang shen. After selling the house, Ding Jia continued to rent the garden until 1948. Ding Daozhou's wife, Qufu Kongshi, has five sons and five daughters. When she was a child, she lived in Ding Family Courtyard. Ding Zeting, the eldest son of Ding Daozhou, is Ding Jian's father. He has been working in Jinan since the founding of the People's Republic of China. In her early fifties, Ding Jian had a daughter studying in Jinan University.
