Who is the Wuye Temple dedicated to?

The Fifth Lord is the Five Dragon King (Guangji Dragon King Bodhisattva), the fifth son of the Dragon King of the East China Sea. He has a violent temperament and a black face, so he is known as the Black-faced Fifth Lord. According to general practice, the Dragon King does not live in Buddhist temples. Legend has it that the Dragon King of Mount Wutai in Shanxi was a prominent spirit who was uneasy about his throne and the temple was uneasy, so a temple was built in the west of the pavilion to worship him (Wuye Temple).

The author recently went to Mount Wutai and witnessed with his own eyes that the popularity of Wuye Temple is not ordinary. There are 124 temples in Mount Wutai (123 temples and 1 temple), and Wuye Temple is one of them. There is a legend in Mount Wutai, the only temple in the world, that the Fifth Master worshiped in the Wuye Temple is also known as the God who responds to all requests, which means that all requests come true. Students who are qualified can go there to experience it in person.

There are many folk legends about Wuye, here are them one by one:

Manjusri Bodhisattva obtained the sacred stone

According to legend, Wutai Mountain was originally called Wufeng Mountain, and the climate is extremely harsh in winter. Drops of water turned into ice, sand and rocks flew in the spring, and the summer was so hot that farmers couldn't even go to the fields to plant crops.

Manjusri Bodhisattva happened to come here to preach. Seeing people suffering, he decided to change the climate here. The Bodhisattva learned that there was a sacred stone called the "Xielong Stone" from the Dragon King of the East China Sea, which could make the dry climate humid, so he became an alms monk and went to the Dragon King to borrow the Xielong Stone.

Manjushri Bodhisattva came to the East China Sea and saw a huge stone outside the Dragon Palace. Before he could even reach the front, he could already feel the cold air coming towards him. Manjushri Bodhisattva saw the Dragon King and explained his intention. The Dragon King said apologetically: "The Archmage can borrow anything, but this dragon-resting stone cannot be borrowed. Because it took hundreds of years to salvage it from the seabed, and it is extremely cool. The dragon sons come back from work every day, sweating If you feel wet and the heat is unbearable, you can rest on it. If you borrow it, the dragons will have no place to rest."

Manjusri Bodhisattva repeatedly explained that he was a monk in Wufeng Mountain and wanted to benefit the world. Came here specifically to ask for help. The Dragon King was unwilling to lend the sacred stone to others, and he was inconvenient to refuse Manjushri Bodhisattva's request directly. It was estimated that the old monk could not carry the stone away by himself, so the Dragon King reluctantly agreed and said: "The sacred stone is very heavy and no one can help you. If you can carry it, just take it!" Manjushri thanked the Dragon King and walked to the sacred stone. In front of him, he chanted a spell and immediately turned the boulder into a small projectile. Manjushri put the projectile into his sleeve and floated away. The old Dragon King was stunned and regretful. When Manjushri Bodhisattva returned to Wufeng Mountain, the sun was blazing. Because of the long drought and no rain, the earth was cracked and people were suffering deeply. Manjushri Bodhisattva placed the sacred stone in a valley in the middle of the mountain, and a miracle happened: Wufeng Mountain immediately turned into an extremely cool natural pasture. Therefore, this valley was named Qingliang Valley, and people built a temple here and named it Qingliang Temple. Wufeng Mountain was also renamed Qingliang Mountain. To this day, Wutai Mountain is also called Qingliang Mountain.

The Qingliang Stone is placed at Qingliang Temple in Wutai Mountain. It is 5 meters long, 2.8 meters wide and 2 meters thick. The weight is about 18,000 kilograms. It also has the magical name of "Manjushri Bodhisattva's Dharma Boat", which can accommodate more than 40 people at the same time.

Inspiring the Five Masters to achieve Zhengguo

Since I learned that Manjusri Bodhisattva recited the scriptures and moved the Xielong Stone to Wufeng Mountain, it became a cool world with four distinct seasons and infinite scenery. Finally, the five Dragon Princes returned to the Dragon Palace and had no place to rest. The five brothers were extremely annoyed and chased them to Wufeng Mountain. Dragon stone.

So the fifth prince of the Dragon King, who was the smartest, went to Manjushri Bodhisattva and wanted to ask for an explanation, saying: "Our dragon-resting stone was a palace-suppressing treasure that went through three difficulties and four calamities. Bodhisattva, how can you be so compassionate?" Can it take away people's beauty?"

Manjusri opened his eyes and saw that this Dragon Prince named Shengyan had a compassionate heart and a strong connection with Buddha, so he deliberately enlightened him and said: "Xia Wu on Wufeng Mountain has nothing to do with it. There is no breeze, no bright sun in winter, the weather is unstable, the people are in dire straits, millions of living beings are worse off than dead, and even their lives cannot be guaranteed. Could it be that the Dragon Prince cannot even contribute a stone for resting to all living beings so that they can survive? You Look, just one of your dragon-resting stones can save tens of millions of lives. Isn’t it a feat of great kindness and compassion?”

After hearing this, Wu Longzi felt that this dragon-resting stone could bring blessings. People asked if it was indeed a good thing to change the harsh living environment in Wufeng Mountain, so they changed their minds and said, "It would be great to save all the people, but because of such a gem, if you make my Shui tribe brothers toss around here, wouldn't it be causing trouble to the world again?" Sentient beings?"

Manjusri nodded after hearing this and said with a smile: "Your compassionate heart has been revealed, and it should be saved. As for them, cause has its effect, and its effect has its cause. If you continue to commit evil like this , I'm afraid..."

Before Manjushri Bodhisattva finished speaking, four other dragon princes rushed in. One of the dragon princes couldn't help but rushed to Manjushri Bodhisattva and shouted: "Bodhisattva, come back quickly. I am the dragon-resting stone!"

Manjushri Bodhisattva looked at it with his wise eyes and said: "For a dragon-resting stone, you have darkened the sky and the earth in Wufeng Mountain, and killed and injured many living beings. I will exchange your life for a dragon-resting stone. You can no longer do evil. Go back to the Dragon Palace quickly. However, if you are really unwilling to make some sacrifices to save Wansheng, I have placed the dragon-resting stone in Mystic Demon. It's broken, you can go and get it later, but you must not hurt any living beings again, Amitabha!"

When the five dragon princes heard this, they immediately rushed out of the Bodhisattva Hall and shouted: "Let's go. , get back the Dragon Resting Stone, we don’t care what he does to save Wansheng!” With that said, all the dragons flew to the Secret Demon Rock to retrieve the Dragon Resting Stone, but as soon as the Five Dragon Prince left the palace, he immediately came back and asked : "Bodhisattva, are you really not going to save all living beings?"

Manjushri Bodhisattva opened his eyes of wisdom from Samadhi and said with a smile: "Cause and effect are always hidden in the heart, where to go, everyone is free to do it!" Then, Manjusri also saved the five dragons, who achieved enlightenment and enlightenment. Like Manjusri, they were the same in appearance and in appearance, with a compassionate heart. They became the incarnation of Manjusri Bodhisattva in Mount Wutai. The other four Dragon Princes came to the two mountains to confront each other in the clouds and fog. Behind the secret magic rock in the deep ravine of the forest, they rushed into the secret magic rock without hesitation. They saw a shining light of wisdom in the cave under the rock, speaking from the platform. There were scrolls of scriptures placed on the platform, but the four dragon princes ignored them at all. As soon as they entered the cave, they looked around. When they couldn't see the shadow of the dragon resting stone after searching for a long time, they immediately became furious and used the dragon's magic weapon. The claws of the dragon's tail were clawing and sweeping wildly, causing the lamps of wisdom to flicker in all directions, and the scriptures to fly everywhere.

At this time, Wulongzi, who stayed beside Manjusri, saw this scene through the Bodhisattva's wisdom. He was very anxious and sighed repeatedly: "What should we do?"

Manjusri Bodhisattva listened and said softly: "The sins committed are too serious, Amitabha! Evil will be rewarded with evil, and good will be rewarded with good!" After saying; After reciting the mantra, I saw the mysterious magic rock suddenly rumbling, and the mountain also followed. They closed them up and locked the four dragon queens and wives in the secret magic rock. Since then, the secret magic rock has been called "Longsuo Cave" by the locals, and since then, Wu Longzi has been on the top of Beitai, specializing in bringing good weather and blessing all living beings. At the same time, he often went to lock the dragon. At the entrance of the cave, he listened to his four brothers chanting sutras in the cave, hoping that they would all achieve enlightenment and be liberated as soon as possible.

Fifth Master Moved

The Five Dragon Kings were saved by Bodhisattva Mantrashu, and after attaining enlightenment, they lived in a temple on the top of Beitai, running around every day busy spreading wind and rain, but As time went by, the Fifth Master was no longer satisfied with spreading wind and rain, so whenever he had free time, he always wanted to solve problems for all sentient beings and seek welfare and profit. Since then, more and more faithful men and women have gone to Beitaiding to seek help from Master Wu.

Later, Manjusri saw that it was a long and inconvenient journey for sentient beings to go to Beitaiding to offer incense, and it was also very hard for Fifth Master to travel back and forth, so he asked him to move to the Pavilion of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Taihuai Town so that he could solve the problems of more sentient beings.

When the temple was inaugurated, many good men and women who had been blessed by the Fifth Master came from a hundred miles away. Just when people were looking forward to praying, an auspicious light suddenly flashed from the top of the North Platform, followed by a burst of spring thunder. The originally bright sky suddenly started to rain heavily. After a while, the rainwater merged into a huge stream. , roaring all the way into the Qingshui River, surging forward. Just when people were astonished, someone suddenly discovered that on the top of the waves, there was a boatman like an iron tower, holding a boat pole, rowing a sailboat from far to near, carrying a black-faced and golden Buddha statue on the boat. This shocked the faithful men and women who came to participate in the celebration. It wasn't until the boat reached people's eyes that a few well-informed old people suddenly woke up and hurriedly shouted: "The Fifth Master is here!" After shouting, they immediately led the faithful men and women to kneel down and kowtow. Only then did the young people welcome the statue of Wu Ye ashore amidst the sound of firecrackers and carry it into the Wu Ye Temple that people carefully built for him. However, strange to say, when people just welcomed the Fifth Master into the temple, auspicious lights were released from the sky, the rain stopped, the river water receded, and the mysterious boatman and boat disappeared without a trace. .

Since then, people have received more favors from Wuye, and the incense in Wuye Temple has naturally become the most prosperous on Mount Wutai.

The ancient stage of Wuye Temple

It is said that one year at the turn of summer and autumn, a theater troupe came near the imperial city, drums and music played in unison, and spectators came in droves. But neither the villagers nor the monks in the temple went out to invite a troupe, so why did they start singing? Someone went to ask the troupe leader, and the troupe leader said: A few days ago, a black-faced master from your Wanfo Pavilion came to our troupe to book play and narrated the details. After hearing this, people suspected that it was Master Wu who did it, but they were not sure. Coincidentally, that night, the old monk, the abbot of Wanfo Pavilion, also had a dream. He dreamed that the Fifth Master walked into the dormitory and said to him: I made a special trip to Fanzhi a few days ago and booked a play with Zhaozhuang Troupe. , and also ordered the plays, which lasted for three days, and also wrote down the price list, which was hidden in the sleeve of my robe.

When he woke up from a dream, the old monk was very surprised. He hurriedly opened the door of the palace and came to the statue of De Wuye. After burning incense and bowing in obeisance, he lifted up the sleeves of his robe and saw a yellow paper slip inside, which read: The number of days and the price of the opera.

According to this legend, people built a unique and elegant stage opposite Wuye Hall.

Historically, every year in the sixth month of the lunar calendar, the Wuye Temple here opened its doors, inviting famous actors to sing good plays for the Fifth Master to watch, hoping that the Fifth Master would bring blessings to the world, good weather, good harvests, and There are many stories about this Dragon King Bodhisattva who punishes evil and promotes good, saves people from fire and water, and responds to requests, so many people come here to make pilgrimages and make wishes.

Fifth Master came to the rescue

One day during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Xuan Ye came to Mount Wutai again. It was a clear and sunny day, and the emperor took advantage of the opportunity to pay homage to the top of the central platform. Along the way, flags and flags were used to clear the way. He enjoyed the scenery on the top of the platform, the exotic flowers and plants, and the fragrant fragrance. He also saw the young boy Manjusri from the Yanjiao Temple. Like solemnity and strong incense, Emperor Xuan Ye couldn't help but think of the prosperity of the Qing Dynasty, and felt very happy. On the way back, he was chatting and laughing with his entourage, and it was very pleasant. But at this moment, a strong wind suddenly blew up, and suddenly the sky was dark and the earth was dark, with sand and rocks flying. The person carrying the sedan quickly stood up, with a black face, a golden body, and a strong body, and shouted loudly: "Why is my lord so alarmed?" Xuan Ye replied, "I have gone to Zhongtai Temple to pay my respects, and when I was about to return, a strong wind suddenly came up, causing me to lose my way." The black-faced man said again, "My lord, don't be anxious, Buddha I will lead you back to the palace immediately." When Emperor Xuan Ye opened his eyes again, he was gone, but a bright light appeared in front of him, as if someone had lit a lamp in the darkness. The sedan bearer hurriedly followed the light, and then returned to the imperial palace smoothly.

When he woke up early the next morning, Emperor Kangxi naturally thought of yesterday’s disorientation in North Korea and the black-faced man who rescued him back to the palace, so he told the presiding monk who accompanied him Regarding this matter, I asked if there was a black-faced monk in the temple in Mount Wutai. The host thought about it for a long time, but he could not think of any temple with such a monk.

After breakfast, Emperor Kangxi walked out of the palace and came to the Pavilion of Ten Thousand Buddhas. When he boarded the Hall of Five Dragon Kings, he looked up and saw that the black-faced golden statue enshrined in the center was the same as the rescuer he saw yesterday. , he was very excited, and immediately said: "It turns out that you are the one who saved me from danger! I will make you the Dragon King Bodhisattva." After saying this, he also gave him half a dagger to show his majesty. Later, once word spread among the people, the attainment status of Dragon King Bodhisattva was confirmed.

The Fifth Master asked him to rebuild the temple in a dream

The Dragon King Temple (Wuye Temple) was built in the Qing Dynasty. In the sixth year of the Republic of China (1917 AD), the Fifth Master disliked the small hall. It was old, so one night, I gave the abbot of Tayuan Temple and the local armor chief a dream with exactly the same content. The dream asked: "Rebuild the temple and re-gild the body. Otherwise, the Fifth Master will be angry and bring disasters in all directions."

The current Dragon King Temple (Wuye Temple) was rebuilt after Wuye’s dream. It was composed of the original rolling shed roof (one of the double-slope roof forms of traditional Chinese architecture, that is, where the front and rear slopes meet) Instead of using ridges, it was built into a curved surface) and was rebuilt into a double eaves resting on the top of the mountain and a Buddhist hall with three couplets. Due to the small size of the site, it was not possible to expand the five eaves, but in order to meet the requirements of the Fifth Master, a suite of halls was built in front of the hall. , which can be regarded as enlarging the palace; in order to please the Fifth Master, the pillar foundations, bird tops, railings, brackets, arch eyes and other places were carved with dragons, phoenixes, lions, unicorns, flowers, figures and other patterns, thus It makes Wuye Temple look magnificent and brilliant.
