Because there is a saying that "the south is king and the north is facing the north", that is to say, those facing the south are called emperors, those facing the north are courtiers, courtiers worship the king, and the emperor's proceedings are all facing the south.

Look at these serious old houses. The doors and windows of the main house face south. One is that primitive people also imitated the royal practice, and the other is the reason of geomantic omen. We now call it compass, which is actually a conventional name. Of course, it can also be called a compass, but everyone is still following the culture of our ancestors. In many other countries and military fields, it is generally called compass.
