The capital of Kazakhstan.

Now the capital of Kazakhstan is Astana. According to the order issued by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev 19971October 20th, Akmola (1998 was renamed as "Astana" on May 6th, which means "the capital") was on 19971February/. Akmola, which means "white tomb" in Kazakh, is located near Siberia in northern Kazakhstan, 0/200 km away from Almaty/Kloc, with a population of more than 200,000. 1In the mid-1950s, thousands of Soviet youth league members responded to the call of the Soviet Union to open up wasteland in the Kazakh steppe, turning this wolf-infested virgin land into a commodity grain base of the whole Soviet Union. To commemorate their achievements, the city was named "Cherinograd", which means "virgin city" in Russian. After Kazakhstan's independence, the city resumed its original name "Akmola". 1On May 6, 1998, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed an order announcing that the new capital Akmola was renamed Astana (meaning "capital" in Kazakh). In explaining the reason for the name change, the President of Kazakhstan said that the Akmola municipality and the representative office both requested the name change. In addition, the news media at home and abroad often quote the negative meaning of Akmola place name (meaning "white tomb" in Kazakh), which is not conducive to establishing the image of the new capital. Kazakhstan and Russia have a 7,500-kilometer-long undefined border, and nearly 70% of the residents in the northern States were Russians when they first became independent, so there has always been a strong tendency of Russian separatism. President Nazarbayev is worried that after Yeltsin, once the Russian authorities are replaced by nationalists, northern Kazakhstan may be reintegrated into Russian territory. The relocation of the national political center to the north will certainly promote the geographical redistribution of Kazakhstan's ethnic groups, especially the Kazakh, its main ethnic group, to the north, which will help to increase their proportion in the ethnic composition of residents in this vast area. As for putting capital into the depth and core of this endless grassland, it will provide continuous support and promotion for the opening, development and comprehensive utilization of grassland.
