After Gao Hua took part in pacifying Changzhou, he helped Yu Tonghai break through Zhao Pusheng's Zhahe Barracks, defeated Chen Youliang again, assisted Changxing, conquered Wuchang, led his navy to Huaidong, and recovered western Zhejiang, with outstanding military exploits. He was promoted to Privy Council, Zuocheng in Huguang Province and Pingzhang in the province. In the third year of Hongwu (AD 1370), Gaohua was named Guangdehou.

Zhu Yuanzhang ordered him to practice as a sailor, but he refused because he was not used to it. Zhu Yuanzhang forgave him because he was old. At that time, many ministers visited the border, and only Gao Hua stayed in Beijing. Later, the seaside castle in Guangdong needed to be repaired, and Gaohua volunteered.

In April of Hongwu four years, the project in Guangdong was completed, and Gaohua died shortly after arriving in Qiongzhou. At first, some people said that he was egoistic, so his annual income was the least. Finally, he was too poor to be buried. Zhu Yuanzhang was so pitied that he ordered Lu Zhi to pay three hundred stones. However, because Gao Hua had no son, the patent certificate he got was buried in the grave. Zhu Yuanzhang also named posthumous title as Cao Guogong, posthumous title Wuzhuang and Hongwu, and buried Huang Dun in June of four years, and his portrait was sacrificed to Gongren Hall.
