Fangcheng County is located in the southern part of Henan Province, in the northeastern corner of Nanyang Basin, at the eastern foot of Funiu Mountain, and in the upper reaches of Tangbai River. Fangcheng, Chu land in the Spring and Autumn Period, was named after the Great Wall built in the Chu Dynasty called Fangcheng. The Qin Dynasty established Yangcheng County here, and the Han Dynasty renamed it Duyang County. Fangcheng County, the first county in the Northern Wei Dynasty, was later abandoned and replaced by Wuchang, and was restored in the Song Dynasty. Jin established Yuzhou here and took over the three counties of Fangcheng, Wuyang and Ye. Ming Dynasty abolished Fangcheng and Renzhou.
