Every year on March 15th of the lunar calendar, it is the birthday of Bixia Yuanjun, who is respectfully known as the Grandma of Mount Tai. Bixia Yuanjun is well known locally. In fact, she is an important fairy in the Buddhist world. It is said that when she traveled to Mount Tai and was attracted by the Feng Shui here, Taishang Laojun had already taken notice. Bixia Yuanjun cleverly hid the embroidered shoes in the rocks under Taishang Laojun's sword, and used the embroidered shoes as a token of the mountain struggle. In the end, Taishang Laojun had to give up this mountain, and Bixia Yuanjun was able to manifest his sainthood here. Bixia Yuanjun's previous life was a jade girl, originating from the golden boy and jade girl statues of the Han Dynasty. During the Five Dynasties, the golden boy turned into a breeze, and the jade girl stayed in the world and became the patron saint of Taishan Temple, responsible for human fertility and the health of children.
In local custom, in order to fulfill their wishes, people will make zodiac pasta or clay dolls and hide them deep in the mountains. From early morning to dawn on March 15th every year, Bixia Yuanjun is said to come to Mount Tai, and making wishes at this time is most effective. On this night, lights were brightly lit up and down the mountain, and the activity of offering incense and making wishes reached its climax. No matter how bad the weather was, believers came steadfastly to pray for their wishes. Therefore, Grandma Taishan’s birthday on March 15th of the lunar calendar is not only a time of celebration, but also an important day for people to place their hopes and pray for well-being.
