Bao Tong: What is the relationship between Feng Shui and Taoism in China?

First of all, we have to understand a question: what is Taoism?

Taoism is a school of thought in the pre-Qin period, mainly represented by Laozi and Zhuangzi. Taoism advocates nature, quietness and opposition to struggle.

Many scholars believe that Taoism pays attention to "inaction" and conforms to the natural laws of heaven and earth, but it has no sense of social responsibility. Compared with Confucian "benevolence", it is much worse.

In fact, this understanding is a misunderstanding of "inaction". "Doing nothing" is not doing nothing, but not changing the laws of nature according to human will, but only doing appropriate things according to the laws of nature. The Confucian "benevolence" is to formulate some norms according to people's social and political needs, so that people can live and develop according to the will of a certain person or group. It can't be said that this is wrong, only that they have their own strengths. But I personally prefer the "inaction" of Taoism, and I still use examples to illustrate it:

There are many Taoist "inaction" thoughts in Chinese medicine. For example, if a person has a cold, Chinese medicine begins with conditioning the body. Chinese medicine believes that people's physique is weak and their resistance is not strong. Drugs can be used to regulate and enhance people's immunity, and people's own immunity can be used to kill cold viruses. Western medicine is like Confucian benevolence. For the emergence of cold virus, we have to use a method to eliminate it, so western medicine is like a system to directly eliminate the virus. The result is the same. Why do you want to say that Chinese medicine is "inaction"?

Because I have always believed that in natural evolution, our nearly perfect immune system is synchronized with the evolution of viruses, so we are not dead. Traditional Chinese medicine conforms to nature and still uses the ability endowed by God to survive. If the conditioned immune system still can't kill the virus, the law of survival of the fittest must let this person die to ensure the implementation of the laws of nature. Western medicine relies on powerful technology that can overwhelm mutant viruses to treat people. It would be a disaster if human's western medicine technology can't keep up with the natural variation of virus and human's immune system doesn't evolve with it.

It is precisely because of this "inaction" of Taoism that they became hermits. They pay more attention to the laws of everything in the world and understand the way of nature, so there will be a magical ability that the world doesn't know, but they can do it. This method and means can be said to be geomantic omen.
