The stream at the top of Huaihe River is called Dongshagou, and its source coordinates are east longitude11.59 minutes and 46 seconds, north latitude is 33 degrees 49 minutes and 55 seconds, and its source elevation is 1329 meters.
In addition, scientists also measured the area of Huaihe River basin, which is 274,657 square kilometers.
Huaihe River Basin is located in the east of China, between the Yangtze River and the Yellow River, flows through Henan, Anhui and Jiangsu, and joins the Yangtze River in Sanjiangying, Yangzhou, Jiangsu. Huaihe River is one of the important rivers in China, and it is also known as the seven major rivers in China along with Yangtze River, Yellow River, Songhua River, Haihe River, Liaohe River and Pearl River. Since China geographer Zhang Yu 1908 put forward "Qinling-Huaihe Line", Huaihe River, as a part of the natural geographical boundary between north and south of China, has a special geographical significance.
Liu Shaochuang said that, like other big rivers in the world, there are problems in the source and length of the Huaihe River. Previously, it was generally believed that the Huaihe River originated from Taibaiding of Tongbai Mountain at the junction of Tongbai County, Henan Province and Suizhou City, Hubei Province, with a total length of 1000 km. However, the exact length of the Huaihe River has always been an open question.
Liu Shaochuang said: "We accurately determined the source of the Huaihe River according to the principle that the source of the Huaihe River is only far away, which is widely adopted by geographers at home and abroad, and re-calculated the length and basin area of the Huaihe River from the newly determined source."
In order to solve the problem of confusion in the source and length data of the world's great rivers, the Institute of Remote Sensing of the Chinese Academy of Sciences began to explore the combination of satellite remote sensing technology and satellite positioning technology to determine the source and length of the world's great rivers, and took the lead in determining the source of the world's ten great rivers and measuring the length and basin area. Huaihe River is the longest river 17 measured by the Institute of Remote Sensing of China Academy of Sciences.
