There are 17 gates in ancient Chongqing, which are in line with geomantic omen and stress survival. They should be built in the image of "Nine Palaces" and "Eight Diagrams" to show the meaning of "Jincheng Tang Chi". There are nine gates, and Lifu can carry water from two rivers into the city. The other eight gates could have been opened, but then there were frequent fires in Chongqing. The government thought that the opening of the gates could not control Mars, so it closed all eight gates. Since then, these eight gates have existed in name only, only for decoration.
Therefore, the seventeen gates in Chongqing are collectively called "nine open and eight closed".
