Introduction to Danxia landform:
Danxia landform is a steep slope landform developed from red beds (not limited to red beds) dominated by terrestrial (including non-continental interlayers). This definition is accepted by most scholars and can also be expressed as "red bed landform characterized by steep cliffs".
Danxia landforms are widely distributed in China, and 1005 Danxia landforms have been identified, which are distributed in 28 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government and special administrative regions).
Among them, Zhuhai and Qidonggou in southern Sichuan belong to young Danxia, Chishui Danxia in Guizhou belongs to young Danxia, Danxia Mountain in Guangdong belongs to mature Danxia, and Longhu Mountain in Jiangxi belongs to old Danxia. Danxia landform is distributed in tropical and subtropical humid area, temperate humid-semi-humid area, semi-arid-arid area and alpine area of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
The lowest altitude can be formed in the eastern coastal zone, and the highest altitude can appear on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau above 4000 meters. But relatively concentrated in the southeast, southwest and northwest. Except China, it is distributed in Central Europe and Australia, among which China is the most widely distributed.
1928, Feng Jinglan and others named the red strata that constitute Danxia Mountain and the corresponding strata in northern Guangdong as "Danxia Layer". In 1938, Chen first put forward the concept of "Danxia Mountain Terrain". 1939, Chen officially used the taxonomic term "Danxia landform", and the concepts of Danxia stratum and Danxia landform (landform is landform) have been used ever since.
Name source:
1928, Feng Jinglan, a mineral deposit scientist with a master's degree in geology from Columbia University, discovered the Tertiary red glutenite in Danxia Mountain, Renhua County, Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, China.
In the Danxia Mountain area, the rock layers with a thickness of 300 ~ 500m are weathered by flowing water and wind, forming fortress-like peaks, various strange stones, stone bridges and caves.
Feng Jinglan realized that this is a unique landscape, and named the red gravel stratum that formed Danxia landform as Danxia stratum. The word "Danxia" comes from Cao Pi's Poems on the Lotus Pond, and "Danxia is accompanied by the bright moon and Huaxing is out of the clouds" refers to the rosy clouds in the sky.
