"Independent spirit, free thought" illuminates the night sky of wisdom like a rock-breaking, which is a spirit lacking in the impetuous society at present. In order to find out the source of this sentence, Mr. Chen Yinque wrote a famous inscription for Wang Guowei, a master of Chinese studies, on the monument of Mr. Wang Jing 'an in Haining on 1929:
Mr. Wang's works, sometimes without chapters; Mr. Wang's theory is sometimes negotiable; Only the spirit of independence and free thought have been worshipped for thousands of years, lasting forever, and * * * shines in Yong Guang.
This is an inscription written by Chen Yinque for the second anniversary of Mr. Wang Guowei's drowning. "Independent spirit, free thinking", these two sentences of Mr. Chen Yinque, can be regarded as the best motto for us to learn and seek knowledge, and should also be the principle that we should follow in educating and cultivating talents. Although this sentence was not said during the May 4th Movement, it is integrated with the spirit of the May 4th Movement.
