The origin of Xiangshan Villa Bai Gongguan

The Xiangshan Villa is also called the "Bai Mansion" because the owner's name is Bai Ju. Bai Ju claims to be a descendant of Bai Juyi, whose nickname is "Xiangshan Jushi".

Xiangshan Villa Bai Gongguan is located at the foot of Gele Mountain in Shapingba, Chongqing. It was originally the suburban villa of Sichuan warlord Bai Ju. Because Bai Ju claimed to be a descendant of Bai Juyi, the great poet of the Tang Dynasty, he named his villa "Xiangshan Villa" using the first two characters of the poet's name "Xiangshan Jushi". However, the people nearby are still accustomed to calling it "White Mansion" according to local customs. In 1939, the Military Command Bureau forcibly purchased it for 30 taels of gold and turned it into a secret prison. In the autumn of 1939, Dai Li changed the Bai Mansion into the "Special Detention Center of the Military Command Bureau", and the semi-basement where food was originally stored was changed into a "dungeon"; in 1943, after the establishment of the Sino-US Cooperation Institute, the Bai Mansion was changed into a hostel for US military personnel in China; 1945 After the end of the Sino-US Cooperation Institute in 2001, Bai Gongguan served as the detention center of the Bureau of Secrecy; in 1988, it was designated as a national key cultural relics protection unit.
