In the early 1980s, the transportation department of Jiangxi Province made a long-term plan for the development of the Gan-Yue Canal, and the navigation department of Ganzhou still retains the plan of the canal that was studied and drawn in that year. At that time, the Ministry of Communications included the planning of Ganyu Canal in the feasibility study plan, and planned to complete the route selection comparison between Ganyu Canal and Gui Xiang Canal in 1983. Later, due to various reasons, the Gui Xiang Canal was selected.
At the Fifth Session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee in 2002, Liu Dehong, a member of CPPCC and then deputy director of the Maritime Safety Administration of the Ministry of Communications, submitted the proposal of "Opening the Ganyu Canal to Lay the Foundation for Enriching the People" and suggested opening the Ganyu Canal.
Some experts have also demonstrated that the natural conditions of the Grand Canal between Jiangxi and Guangdong are far superior to the Rhine-Danube Canal. The opening of the Jiangxi-Guangdong Canal will ensure that a large number of small and medium-sized ships in Guangdong and Jiangxi will change from the current maritime navigation to inland navigation, shorten the existing navigation mileage 1.204 km, and reduce transportation costs. In addition, it can also reduce the navigation density of the Yangtze River trunk line, reduce the situation that small boats and large ships compete for navigation channels, and make navigation on the Yangtze River safer.
However, nearly 600 years have passed since the Jie Jin era, but the Jiangxi-Guangdong Canal has always remained in suspense.
