The "nine streams" mentioned in "Literature and History" refer to Confucianism, Taoism, Yin and Yang School, Legalist School, Famous School, Mohist School, Military Strategist, Miscellaneous School and Peasant Family respectively.

Later, people divided the "nine streams" into "upper nine streams", "middle nine streams" and "lower nine streams" according to social status.
