Mild strangulation
Wang Bikun
Many people have been to Xishuangbanna in southern Yunnan, visited tropical botanical gardens and experienced the magical scenery of tropical rain forests. I have also been to Jinghong, Mengla and Menghai twice. But what impressed me the most was not the folk customs of Montparanas, nor the wild elephants, peacocks and small dancing grasses looking up at the sky, but the shocking strangulation of plants lurking in the forest.
In the tropical rain forest, countless animals and plants are full of vitality and harmony, but they also hide evil opportunities. Herbivores eat green plants and carnivores eat herbivores. This basic food chain is commonplace and has become natural. The strangulation phenomenon of plants eating plants is incredible.
In fact, strangulation of plants in tropical rainforests can be seen everywhere, and it is also common in lush banyan trees. Most of the stranglers are banyan trees, and the strangled objects are tall trees such as oil palm and red rafter trees. The fruit of banyan is eaten by many birds and animals. Because the seeds are small and hard, they are not easy to digest, so they are stuck to other trees with the feces of birds and animals. Once the conditions are right, these banyan seeds can germinate and grow, and constantly grow criss-crossing air roots to wrap the trunk and become epiphytes. Slowly, these aerial roots gradually climbed down the ground and extended into the soil, forming their own strong roots, desperately competing for water and nutrients. And it can grow up quickly, and branches and leaves will soon cover the crown for sunshine. At the same time, aerial roots are long and thick, forming a network system, tightly holding the trunk until they suffocate and die, but grow into independent trees. Another strangled plant crept quietly along the ground and climbed to other trees. Many roots grew horizontally to wrap the trunk to form reticular roots and strangle the trees. All these horrible strangulation processes under the shortcut of life are actually very intimate and gentle in the real forest. Strangled plants, thick or thin branches, are attached to the tree they worship with a weak attitude inadvertently, and grow rapidly in secret. They cling to the tree and suck it, making it invisible in silence until it decays unconsciously. The forest is still calm, and that terrible feeling is only known to those helpless trees that are about to be hanged.
If we look at it systematically, we can see the sinister characteristics of strangled plants under the gentle appearance of strangled trees. They attack trees that provide conditions for their seeds to germinate and grow in an all-round way, which can be described as "ingratitude" and "bite the hand that feeds you". Underground, strangled plants desperately plunder water and nutrition, making strangled trees hungry and forced to go on a diet. On the ground, the developed roots of strangled plants tightly surround the strangled trunk, which limits the transportation of water and nutrients and causes malnutrition. In the air, the strangled plants quickly branch upward, and the long leaves rob the space and sunlight, which makes the strangled trees unable to carry out photosynthesis and become pale, weak, pitiful and morbid. Those once unattainable trees will be strangled gently and slowly once they meet strangled plants and cling to the potential weakly and obediently. This process is as short as one or two years, and as long as three or four years, almost all strangled plants will die. But the strangled plants grow into trees in situ, which will eventually be regarded as their own delicious food, and all the nutrients in the rotten branches and leaves will be absorbed. When the strangulation was over, the strangled banyan tree expanded rapidly and grew wildly. Many aerial roots grew into dense trunks, inserted into the soil, and supported huge trees, forming a beautiful and unique "single tree into a forest" landscape with hidden mystery.
This phenomenon of plant strangulation has been dubbed by local people as "small honey makes a fortune" and "the hero is sad and beautiful", which will inspire everyone. Faced with these enchanting, touching, tall, beautiful, greedy, cruel and ambitious strangulation plants, we will naturally think of the variation of power, money and color, the ugly state of flattery, the disorder of game rules and the imbalance of moral balance in human society, and see how many people who used to be like trees are being strangled unconsciously and gently strangled. Who would have thought that strangulation could also spread between people and trees? It is difficult to find out whether the evil flower strangled by plants is that humans have learned trees or trees have learned humans.
Swimming in Banna Tropical Botanical Garden, everyone is scrambling to take a photo with the graceful strangled banyan tree. Before a tall banyan tree formed a hollow, I got into the bamboo cage-shaped tree and took a photo. I am really worried about being strangled and digested by this beautiful banyan tree. If life can rotate between plants and animals, I will become a tree in the tropical rain forest. In a hot and humid environment, I really don't know if I can avoid strangling banyan trees or strangling other trees. But if I have to be a plant, I think I will be a tree in the north and a grass in the south, and maybe I will get an independence and peace.
