Zhongshan City is located in the south-central part of the Pearl River Delta, bordering the lower reaches of the Beijiang River in the west, Panyu City and Shunde City in the north, Jiangmen City, Xinhui City and Doumen County in the west, Zhuhai City in the southeast, and facing Shenzhen City and Hong Kong across the Pearl River Estuary across the Lingdingyang Ocean. Since the reform and opening up of urban development and construction, Zhongshan has developed from an agricultural county with "small town and big village" into a modern city with industry as the main body, medium scale, urban and rural integration, reasonable layout, supporting facilities and complete functions. The built-up area of the central city has expanded from 5.6 square kilometers in 1998 to 26.59 square kilometers.
