In the 13th year of Tang Zhenguan (639 AD), Li Yuanying, the 22nd son of Tang Emperor Li Yuan and the younger brother of Tang Taizong Li Shimin, was granted the title of King Teng in Tengzhou, Shandong. He built a pavilion in Tengzhou called "Tengwang Pavilion" (it has been destroyed). In the fourth year of Xianqing of the Tang Dynasty (AD 659), Teng Wang Li Yuanying was transferred to the governor of Hongzhou in the south of the Yangtze River (now Nanchang, Jiangxi). Because he missed his hometown of Tengzhou, he built the famous "Tengwang Pavilion". The Pavilion of the Prince of Teng became well-known to future generations due to Wang Bo's "Preface to the Pavilion of the Prince of Teng" and became an eternal classic. 02

Tengwang Pavilion, the Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan, Hubei, and the Yueyang Tower in Hunan are known as the "Three Famous Towers in Jiangnan". In history, Tengwang Pavilion has been rebuilt 29 times, and it has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. On October 29, 2018, Nanchang Tengwangge Tourist Area was approved by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction. 03

The main building of Tengwang Pavilion has a net height of 57.5 meters and a construction area of ??13,000 square meters. The lower part is a 12-meter-high pedestal symbolizing the ancient city wall, which is divided into two levels. The main pavilion above the pedestal adopts the "three light and seven dark" format, that is, it looks like a three-story building with corridors from the outside, but there are seven floors inside, that is, three light floors, three dark floors, plus the equipment floor in the roof. 04

In the 260 years from the fifth year of Shunzhi (1648 AD) to the first year of Xuantong (1909 AD), there were as many as thirteen times of ups and downs. Among them, it was destroyed seven times by fire, twice by war, and four times by natural damage. Each reconstruction was not as good as that of the Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties. The scale of the buildings was low and some folk practices were adopted. There are photos of the late Qing Dynasty Pavilion for reference. 05

In ancient times, Tengwang Pavilion was regarded as an auspicious Feng Shui building. The old saying goes: "The vine is broken and the gourd is cut, and the tower is ruined and the chapter is broken." "Teng" is a homophony of "Teng", which refers to the Pavilion of King Teng; "Gourd" refers to the treasure; "Pagoda" refers to the rope golden tower; "宮" means collapse; "Yuzhang" means Nanchang. The meaning of this ancient ballad is that if Tengwang Pavilion and Shengjin Pagoda collapse, the talents and treasures in Yuzhang City will be lost, and the city will also decline and no longer prosper.
